This lesson has been designed to meet the following National Curriculum objectives: • Listening to and discussing a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independently (Year 1) • Learning to appreciate rhymes and poems, and to recite some by heart (Year 1) • Continuing to build up a repertoire of poems learnt by heart, appreciating these and reciting some, with appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear (Year 2) The poems included are: • ‘Caterpillar’ about the lifecycle of caterpillar • ‘White Hen Sitting’ about the lifecycle of a chicken • ‘Hurt No Living Thing’ encouraging kindness to all creatures • ‘Hopping Frog’ comparing a frog and a toad • ‘City Mouse and Garden Mouse’ comparing different habitats The PPT provided for each poem contains: • The poem with supporting visual images • Background information about the poet and poem • Discussion questions • Guidance on how to perform the poem • An optional writing activity Each resource also includes differentiated comprehension worksheets.
